Terror Tract (aka House on Terror Tract) (2000) (1st viewing) d. Dreesen, Lance / Hutchinson, Clint (USA) 96 min.

Another fun little forgotten anthology flick, this one with John Ritter serving as a realty agent chauffeuring an interested couple around the neighborhood, with chilling tales accompanying the backstory of every house he shows. We’ve got a cheating wife caught in the act by her vengeful husband, we’ve got a killer monkey terrorizing a younger Bryan Cranston and family, and a kid who sees visions of the “Granny Killer” as the psycho strikes. Good stuff, again thanks to Gert.

Our Mother’s House (1967) (1st viewing) d. Clayton, Jack (UK) 104 min.

From the director of The Innocents comes a twisted little fable about a gaggle of children who cover up their bedridden mother’s demise, attempting to continue life uninterrupted by cashing her disability checks and keeping a close eye on secrecy. Each night, there is “mother time,” where one of the tykes (Pamela Franklin) communes with the spirit of dear mater, telling them what to do next in times of uncertainty. An unusual and tense atmosphere pervades throughout, especially once the youngsters’ father (Dirk Bogarde) comes knocking… Well worth seeing.

Innkeepers, The (2011) (1st viewing) d. West, Ti (USA) 101 min.

Color me disappointed, especially after all the positive buzz I had heard beforehand. As someone who genuinely liked House of the Devil and who enjoys slow burn horror as a rule, this was simply a case of not enough story or scares to sustain interest. All the Steadicam shots around the deserted hotel cannot help but remind one of how much better Kubrick did it 30 years ago with The Shining.
